If you want romance, this isn't it, unless a woman figuring out how to love herself and her way back into her life counts . What this book does give the reader is a look at PTSD and anxiety, both of which I can relate to, all while incorporating suspense, mystery, chills and thrills.This is the book I will recommend to everyone this year. It is not like anything I have read by T.J. Loveless. It is not like anything I have read in years, if ever. I want more. I want books to make me feel like this one did. Even if the feelings are raw and fractured.
I am a fan of T.J. Loveless. I have read everything she has published to date. But if you read one book by her, read this one. And then tell me it didn't affect you in some way. It did me, right to my core.

I loved another book by this author, so went looking for more of hers.
It is hard to believe that this is written by the same author as Lucky Number Six.
This is not a book I would recommend unless you really like blood and gore. And even if you do, I don't think I would recommend it.
It is almost as if it is written by two different people. It starts so so and the girl has awful things done and cruelty is rampent.
Then we turn a page and we find that she has friends in high places....very high. Next we have whole squads of gunmen and everybody is bleeding and everyone dies except her.....too much.
Too much blood, too much nonsense, too much heroics. Maybe a more accomplished writer, or even a very good editor, could have pulled it off, but this one didn't. I can not recommend it.
The storyline itself is good and I was able to follow it but there were a lot of time gaps that need to be edited. For example, the main character is standing by the window watching the sun rise and the next sentence she is getting up off of the bed for lunch. If this has been the only time it is understandable but the whole book is littered with this type of time lapse instances. By the end of the book, you know that someone is going to step up and save the character. She is put into every bad situation known to mankind and out of nowhere an unintroduced "hero" is available for her to turn to. She also is able to do physically impossible things, like braid her hair the day after she broke her arm that was not set. If you can get over these improbable things, the grit and steel of the character that the author is trying to portray comes through and you find yourself wondering how she can continue with so much stacked against her. A somewhat grudging admiration keeps you reading to make sure she survives yet another plot twist.
Anyone who has been a victim of a violent crime or sexual assault may want to steer clear of this book. Lots of violence seen from the lens of a survivor.
I did enjoy a female heroine but I found this book difficult to follow and grew tired of her constant battle to stay alive. The plot thickens - too much in this case.
There I was, strolling through Chapter One and the mundanity of Karen Barnes life as a rancher, horse trainer, and breeder of champion Quarter Horses. I admit it, I hit my first yawn...and then a mysterious stranger appears, and then the handsome, sometime lover...and then WHAM!
T.J. Loveless took me on a wild and unrelenting ride through murder, mayhem and intrigue. Her portrayal of Barnes as a vulnerable and damaged woman whose life becomes a physical metaphor for the mental trauma within her mind is written with heart wrenching accuracy, and with good reason. Barnes belief in the inner strength, survival, and recovery of her beloved horse becomes the symbol of her own survival. She is knocked down at every turn, betrayed at every corner, yet she survives to fight another day.
Gritty and sometimes gruesome, Fractured Steel is an exciting story with a strong and memorable heroine. It is also a tribute to the men and women of our Armed Forces and to those who carry within them injuries the rest of us can’t see.
I’m looking forward to reading more from this knowledgeable and talented author.
I had never heard of TJ Loveless before I purchased this book, I found it on accident while I was searching for something new to read and I can honestly say it was a very happy accident for me.
The story of Captain Karen Barnes is truly a heartfelt tale of a wounded soldier and her fight to remain intact after coming home from war. While it touches on her time spent overseas that's not the focus of our story, but rather just a snippet of her background and why she is who she is. The story picks up after she's home and a new war brews on her home turf that revolves around her and a horse named Five-Alarm.
For the first time in a long time, I actually felt like I was right there alongside our heroine. TJ is a true story-teller that makes you feel what you're reading and transports you from the real world into the book world. The descriptions of every place and the details of every situation make you truly feel what our heroine is feeling and why she's feeling that way.
This story is full of mystery, action, suspense, and surprises. It's very fast paced and you find yourself wondering if Karen will ever catch a break so that you can catch your breath. It was difficult to put down and had me thinking about it when I was unable to pick it up and read. I enjoyed the story and the writing so much that I purchased the spin-off book from this one, as well as another written by this author.
While there is one explicit scene the book contains no other sexual content beyond that one scene, and I don't want to spoil the story for anyone I do think that I should give you a fair warning though because that one scene is graphic and gut wrenching.
